McKenzie Health System Reestablishes Sanilac County Alzheimer’s Disease Support Group

Thanks to a grant from the Sanilac County Community Mental Health Authority, McKenzie Health System (MHS) was able to successfully establish the ongoing Sanilac County Alzheimer’s Disease Support Group, which meets the first Friday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in the main dining room at the hospital to offer caregiver support and education.

The grant also allowed 36 local caregivers to benefit from a caregiver’s workshop from the Alzheimer’s Association, which discussed the warning signs of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia, strategies for communication, and caring for the caregiver.

“We appreciate the ongoing support for the tremendous work that caregivers do in our community, and this grant has enabled us to provide further support and resources around Alzheimer’s Disease and caregiving,” said Louise Blasius, LMSW, LPC, Director of Human Services at McKenzie Health System. “The Sanilac County Community Mental Health Authority has enhanced both dignity and education for patients and caregivers in the county, and these efforts will continue to make an impact.”

In addition, McKenzie Health System updated and distributed “The Sanilac County Dementia Directory and Resource Manual” with information on understanding dementia and recognizing the signs, along with a listing of mental health organizations, hospitals, doctors’ offices, senior citizen meal sites, nursing homes and other pertinent locations within the county. Three “Safe Return” bracelets, inscribed with the toll-free crisis number to let others know that the individual is memory-impaired and may need assistance, were also distributed.

Based on outreach and activities, McKenzie Health System estimates that nearly 2,100 patients and caregivers have benefited from this prevention project; the grant period was June 2-Sept. 30, 2017.

The Sanilac County Alzheimer’s Disease Support Group continues to meet the first Friday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in the main dining room at the hospital and is open to the public. For more information, call Louise Blasius at 810-648-6181.
